Question: What are the benefits of terpenes in CBD oil?

Hello, this is Dr. Bill Rawls. CBD from hemp is a hot topic right now. With the recently approved Farm Bill, CBD from the form of cannabis called hemp is now legal all through the country.

Anybody can get it without a prescription. You can buy it over the Internet. So there are a lot of different sources of it. But there is quite a bit of difference in different products, and the difference has to do with the other components of the form of cannabis called hemp.

Hemp is an herb. It has a full spectrum of chemicals. So CBD, or cannabidiol, the full name, is only one component. And we know about all the wonderful things that cannabidiol does, but there are other chemicals there.

One spectrum I’d like to talk to you about is the terpenes that are present in cannabis — they may be as important as the CBD. Terpenes are chemicals that you find in plants. They’re oil-based, so all of your essential oils have different kinds of terpenes.

But the terpenes in cannabis are really fascinating. They have some wonderful properties, including anti-inflammatory properties and immune-balancing properties. So they’re doing some really wonderful things in the body.

But we’re also finding that they enhance the benefits of the CBD. So CBD by itself is one thing, but you add the spectrum of terpenes and other chemicals in the cannabis, and you get a more pronounced effect that we call the entourage effect. So having the terpenes is really, really important.

Now, that’s one thing that’s missing in a lot of the CBD oil products. Many extraction methods actually damage or remove the terpenes. So when you’re looking for a CBD product, it’s really important to look for a product that has the full spectrum of all the chemicals, all the cannabinoids, including cannabidiol (CBD) and the full spectrum of terpenes, to get the full effect from the herb that is going to provide the most benefits.
